It's Whooo You Know

So it's been a while since I've last blogged. I haven't felt the urge to write one in a few weeks, maybe because I haven't thought anything was newsworthy, although a pretty newsworthy occurrence happened last Sunday.

Last Saturday Maris and I went out and had a few drinks and came back home. I left the bike out front. It was our last day on our contract for the bike. We intended on extending it a bit more because we were going to be staying for another three weeks for our Thai Language course.

I wake up in the morning to find it gone. I walk around the block looking for it in utter disbelief, it was gone. Stolen. Immediately I think, it was stolen by the private owner of the bike that rented it to me. She had to have stolen it, it was our LAST day to have the bike. Maybe she wanted to take our money and charge us for the entire bike.

I called our English friend with a thai wife. They have been our good friends here in town. He knows a lot of people who know the right people in this town. One guy, a particularly well known young thai made calls to the chop shops in town and the kids that could have done it. No response from him, so it must not have been the kids he knew. We then contacted another well known Thai in the city, the owner of the bar that the girl who rented the bike to us worked for. After hearing from our English friend that the girl is not malicious and is, frankly, too stupid to pull something like this off, we asked the owner.

Within 20 minutes we get a call back. The cops found the bike and arrested the kids who stole it. They took the front tire off and busted the lock that kept the tire turned so that it couldn't simply be wheeled away when being stolen. The girl who rented us the back had a particularly sketchy boyfriend. Nobody liked him and apparently he was pretty abusive. He was trying to convince her to take us for way more money that we owed them. The man who runs the bar, who found the bike, who is "well Known" in the town and treated with a great deal of respect basically told that guy that if they tried to rip us off, his ass would be kicked and his girlfriend would be fired and thrown out on the street (he was also the landlord of her apartment on top of the bar). Believe it or not, the bar owner is an extremely nice guy, doesn't seem like a badass, but apparently he is not scared to make himself clear physically with people. Luckily he liked us and really liked our good friend, so we got out paying 6k baht, which is roughly 200 dollars. We were expecting to pay over a 1000 so we were happy.

Because the sketchy boyfriend knew our Apartment number, I decided we should change rooms just for piece of mind. So we did, we moved into the noisiest room I have ever been in. All hours of the night it sounds like a heard of drunk elephants are moving there things in above, below and next door to us.

Our first night in the new room proved interesting in that we heard what sounded like a pretty serious domestic dispute. A woman screaming and things shattering. I lock Maris in the room and go next door to the Thai restaurant owners we had become "friends" with, and told them what was going on. The husband owner went across the street and got a policeman who owns a cel phone shop. He went up to the room and came back down and simply says "The girlfriend is the crazy one, he is not fighting her".

That apparently stopped the "fighting" and we got a good nights sleep. It has been raining for about 5 days now, preventing us from doing much. It gets very old staying in a room for 5 days, so I have taken up possibly writing a story, book, novel, who knows- something I write a beginning, middle and end to, we will see how long or short it is to decide what to call it.

We start our Thai course tomorrow. I think when we are done I am gonna take pictures of everyday things here in the neighborhood and tell you what they are, just to keep myself busy and to let you all know what we see on a day to day basis and try and give you a bit of a taste of our Thai lives.

Well that's all for now, sorry for such a long delay. Take care!

Til Next Time.

  1. Hi, it's good that you have established some friendships with the right people there. Sorry to hear of the theft, but I guess that there are thieves among us everywhere. Was wondering what was going on with the lapse in blog updates. Sounds like writing may be a good hobby to take up, could be lucrative and a great activity with all of the rain that falls in the area. Maybe a series of short stories could be a good starting point. Take care and keep the blog and pictures coming. -- Uncle Wade

The Beginning

The Beginning

I am a 25 year old, southern Gent. I've been bothered by the fact that I've not traveled the world or even left the country, sans a trip to Cancun when I was in High School, but that was so muddled with tequila and strip clubs (sorry mom), that It doesn't REALLY count- that I have decided to take a adventure across the globe with the love of my life.

All I needed was a motivator, I needed someone to push me to travel and tell me, "Now's the time to do this, and we should totally do it". She came, she said those magic words and now we've got our bags packed, watching the calendar.

I had intentions on moving to New York City with my girlfriend. We are both really big into music and both have a spot in our hearts for the city. The opportunity escaped us after having our hopes deflated by the freaky rent prices there. We kind of ditched the New York idea immediately following a trip there and the mention of Thailand.

We had always tossed around the idea of traveling together. I knew I wanted to travel with her. The first place she mentioned was Thailand, and after 20 minutes on Craigslist, checking out places and prices, we were sold (prob not the best way to chose where you want to spend your life, but that's just how it happened, and this is my story). Thailand it was.

So here we are 6 months later, a ticket for Bangkok dated August 4th in our hands. When people ask us how long we will be in Thailand, we say "Indefinitely". We are ready for a life change, something that might coax us into never coming back.

I have been dreaming of the sand and the crystal beaches since we mentioned the move, I have also had nightmares of being locked up and having to deal with a girlfriend who has been kidnapped by some crazy python handler, but those are just dreams.

The truth is, I have never been so excited and nervous at the same time for anything in my life. Right, now as I sit on my couch in South Knoxville looking out the window at the homemade bird feeders we made, on a hot Sunday afternoon, it blows my mind to think that in a little under two months, I might be laying in the sand with the tide riding up my mini bathing suit, with some concoction of a random Thai's design to sip in one hand, watching long-tailed boats float over the horizon, holding the love of my life in the other.

I expect to be shocked, excited, impressed, disappointed, lost, scared, found, happy, comfortable, uncomfortable, drunk, frightened, enlightened, ready to come home, ready to stay forever- all at different times on this journey.

But one thing that will never change will be when I am an old man, maybe back in South Knoxville, sitting on my porch in a rocking chair with my old wife, widdling some crazy little thing old men on porches widdle, I will be able to look over to my wife and ask, "Remember that time we went into that local bar in Thailand and we saw that Thai Prostitute perform that "Ping-Pong show?" I am glad we shared that moment together."

And she will say, "Brock that's disgusting" and then smile a little bit.
